Video Call Etiquette – the do’s and don’ts

OK, so we are all seasoned pro’s at video calling by now. Millions are still connecting with their colleagues, business partners, and customers online. However, it’s never too late to brush up on your video etiquette and learn from our experiences over the past year. Here are our top tips:

Be Prepared

Be punctual, allow for those few minutes to ‘join the meeting’ and get familiar with the platform you’re using (especially features such as chat, hands up etc if it’s a larger meeting). It is also a good idea to be aware of the agenda so you can prepare your contribution in advance or ask questions if necessary.

Test your Technology

An obvious one, but even in our new world technical difficulties occur. Before joining, ensure your microphone, speakers and headphones are working, plus make sure the internet speeds support a decent level of quality for a video call.

Professional & Pay Attention!

It is important to stay focussed, so put away your phone and turn off notifications. As for your outfit, it is probably best to adhere to your company’s dress code. Try not to get distracted, it is tempting to work on other tasks, but this can be very off-putting for others.

Body Language

Body language, manners, and level of engagement on video calls can influence how colleagues and others interpret your message. So, sit up straight, look into the camera – it’s the equivalent of looking others in the eye!
