How to communicate well on video calls

We recently published a blog on video call etiquette and as it’s something we do daily at GHM it sparked an interesting chat on how we feel when we’re on a call. So, following on from how we should communicate on a call, here are a few tips on how to make online meetings more comfortable and effective.

There is no doubt that video calls can sometimes be awkward. We need to think more and it can be harder to build rapport compared to meeting in person. Try to make eye contact still, and position yourself further away from the camera so others can read your body language.

You’re probably at ease with your team by now, but to make everyone relax with new people on a call, the host could do a quick icebreaker. It can be an enjoyable start before moving on to the meeting agenda.

Also, don’t be afraid to move more. At GHM we like a good wave at the end of a call, the more original the better! We can also use our hands to gesticulate, just like we do face to face.

In face-to-face meetings, silence can be powerful as we digest our thoughts and the same needs to apply online. On video calls, if there is silence don’t assume a person is on mute. Give people time to think before commenting. The same goes for emails. If you don’t get a reply straight away then don’t worry, it could just be that more thought is needed. Take your time.

And remember it’s okay to feel nervous or uncomfortable even if you’re online. We are all still learning to adapt to a new way of working. We hope you enjoyed these tips.
