Millions at Risk of Using Insecure Routers

A Which? Investigation has found that millions could be at risk of using routers with security flaws. Many devices are not having their firmware updated. Since the start of the pandemic, we rely on the internet more than ever to work, shop, and stay in touch with friends and family. 

The security flaws include weak default passwords. These passwords can be easily guessed by cybercriminals anywhere in the world. It also opens up local network vulnerabilities, allowing hackers to control devices to see what users are browsing or direct them to malicious websites. The investigation also found many devices have not had a security update since 2018. 

The first thing you should do is check you do not have a router with a weak password default and look to change it. If devices are no longer updated or more than five years old, an upgrade should be arranged.
